In the middle of October, 1916, 47th Division left the Somme and moved north to Ypres in Belgium. On 19th October, 140 Brigade  took over the Bluff sector in the southern part of the salient where there had been almost constant mining and counter-mining by both sides and where the whole area was riddled with mine craters, most of which were fortified and held by one side or the other. At 6am on 22nd October, 6th London were holding the front line here when the enemy blew three new mines close to existing craters (C and D), where the battalion had forward posts. These were destroyed by the explosions as was the post near crater B where another mine was blown and a new crater formed. The unfortunate occupants of these posts were mostly killed. The Germans followed this up at 9am by occupying Crater B but in the evening 6th London were able to regain possession of this. The end result of the action here were some more holes in the ground and more casualties for 6th London. One of these was Herbert Perkins.
